We often think intuition whispers through the mind, but more often, it speaks through the body. That quiet ache everyone knows: the knot in the stomach, the heavy chest, the intuitive nudge we ignored. The tension in your shoulders, the lump in your throat, the flutter in your belly… these are not inconveniences to fix. They’re messages to hear.
I know this personally. There were moments after my divorce, raising three children, and trying to rebuild my career, when I thought I could push through everything with sheer will. My mind said “I’m fine,” but my body told a different story – tight shoulders, restless energy, shallow breath. That’s when I began to realise: my body was speaking, and I had been too busy to listen
What It Means When Your Body Speaks
Your body communicates constantly through sensations, tension, energy blocks, and subtle cues you might overlook.
- Tension and tightness are messages that your nervous system is sensing threat or imbalance.
- Fatigue or resistance is your body’s way of signalling the need for rest or realignment.
- Energy flow disruptions (which Reiki and other energy practices work with) show where alignment or attention is needed.
When your nervous system feels safe, your body speaks in calm guidance. A gentle intuition, a subtle pull. When your system is dysregulated, it speaks through chaos -tight muscles, headaches, emotional heaviness, and restless energy.
By tuning into these signals, you can begin to understand the language of your body: a language of safety vs. threat, of wisdom waiting to be heard. Reiki, gentle energy awareness, or even mindful touch can help support this flow and create alignment, allowing the body’s messages to be received rather than ignored.
Learning to Listen
Your body is always speaking; you just need to slow down enough to hear it. Here are four practical ways to tune in and respond with care:
1. Pause Before You Push
Life often tells us to keep moving, keep producing, keep fixing. But when you feel tension, fatigue, or a subtle unease, that’s your body signalling it needs attention. Take a deliberate pause. Ask yourself: “What do I need right now?” You might notice a need for rest, hydration, a stretch, or simply a few quiet breaths. Giving yourself permission to pause, communicates to your nervous system that it’s safe to relax

2. Name the Sensation
Acknowledging physical sensations is a powerful first step toward regulation. For example: “My shoulders are tight,” or “There’s a flutter in my stomach.” Naming it aloud or in your mind doesn’t just build awareness, it tells your body that you see it, you honour it, and you’re ready to respond. This simple act begins to shift tension and creates space for healing
3. Breathwork or Reiki Moment
Your breath is a direct line to your nervous system. Try placing a hand on your heart or belly, inhaling deeply for four counts, holding gently for two, and exhaling for six. As you breathe, notice any sensations or emotions arising, let them move before the mind tries to fix them. If you practice Reiki or energy work, you can combine this breath with gentle energy awareness, imagining your hands channeling calm and alignment into areas of tension. Even 1–3 minutes can reset your nervous system and help your body speak in softer, clearer guidance.
4. Keep a Body Journal
Writing down physical cues alongside emotional or mental states helps you notice patterns over time. For example, you might see that your chest tightens every time you take on too much work, or that your energy dips when you skip meals or neglect sleep. Journaling connects your mind and body, transforming scattered signals into coherent messages that guide your decisions and actions. Over time, you’ll develop an intuitive understanding of your body’s language and be able to respond before stress escalates.
Try a 2–3 Minute Body Listening Practice
If your body has been trying to get your attention, a short, intentional practice can help you tune in and begin the conversation. Here’s a simple 2–3 minute exercise to do anywhere:
- Find Your Space
Sit or lie comfortably. Place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly. Close your eyes if it feels safe. - Ground Your Awareness
Inhale slowly through your nose for 4 counts, feel your belly expand. Hold gently for 2 counts, then exhale through your mouth for 6 counts, letting your shoulders release tension. Repeat 2–3 times. - Tune Into Sensations
Notice areas of tightness, warmth, or subtle energy. Don’t try to fix them, simply observe. Your body is speaking; you are listening. - Close the Practice
Take one final inhale, letting your chest and belly fully expand. Place your hands over your heart and silently say: “I hear you. I am listening. I am safe.”
Doing this regularly strengthens your nervous system, helps your body communicate more clearly, and allows your mind to integrate the calm.
Empowering Takeaway
The more you listen, the less your body has to shout. Healing starts when you trust the quiet wisdom beneath the noise.
If your body has been trying to get your attention – through exhaustion, overthinking, or emotions that won’t move – it might be time to come home to it. Book a complimentary discovery call and begin your next breakthrough.
