As someone who works with the nervous system and healing every day, I see firsthand how transformative conscious breath can be. Your breath has been with you since your first inhale as a newborn and continues to carry you through every experience. Often unnoticed, it quietly guides you, helping your mind, body, and spirit stay connected.
I’m Yvette, a Belief Breakthrough Coach and Reiki Master. In my work guiding women through nervous system regulation, breathwork is a pivotal tool. It isn’t just something you do automatically; it’s a direct line to your body’s intelligence, signalling safety, releasing tension, and reconnecting your mind, body, and spirit.
Once you begin to see your breath as both biology and spirit, you realise how profoundly it shapes the way you feel, heal, and respond to life.
How Breath Reconnects You to Your Nervous System
Your nervous system constantly scans for danger, shifting into fight, flight, or freeze when it senses a threat. Over time, this system can become overactive, leaving you anxious, restless, or shut down even when there’s no immediate danger.
When your nervous system is stuck in overdrive, it can show up as tightness in your chest, shallow breathing, a racing mind, or emotional overwhelm. These are not signs of weakness – they’re invitations to listen. Conscious breathing sends signals of safety directly to your nervous system, helping regulate stress responses and support emotional and physical balance.
Here is where your breath becomes your greatest ally. Each inhale and exhale speaks directly to your nervous system. Slow, intentional breathing tells your body: You are safe. You can soften. You can return home to yourself.
Breath as Spirit, Breath as Life
In so many spiritual traditions, the breath is seen as sacred, the very life force, prana, chi, or spirit that animates us. When you breathe with awareness, you’re not only regulating your body; you’re reconnecting with the soul of who you are.
Breath brings you back into presence. It dissolves separation. It awakens a deep sense of belonging within. When you understand how breath reconnects you to your nervous system, every inhale becomes an opportunity to self-regulate and restore balance. A reminder that healing happens in the space between breaths.

Simple Breath Practices to Reconnect
Breathwork doesn’t need to be complicated. These three gentle techniques are easy to use daily yet powerful enough to create lasting calm within your nervous system.
1. The Physiological Sigh
How: Take two quick, deep inhales through your nose, then exhale slowly with a long sigh through your mouth. Repeat three times. Watch this.
Why it works: This pattern naturally resets your autonomic nervous system. The double inhale fills your lungs completely, increasing oxygen levels, while the long exhale signals to the vagus nerve that it’s safe to relax. It’s a fast, science-backed method to release built-up stress.
2. Honey Bee Breath (Bhramari)
How: Inhale deeply, then exhale while making a soft humming sound, like a bee. Feel the vibration in your chest and head.
Why it works: The humming activates the vagus nerve, helping regulate heart rate, blood pressure, and nervous system activity. It also promotes mindfulness, grounding, and emotional calm, perfect for anxiety or overthinking.
3. Belly Breathing
How: Place a hand on your belly. Inhale slowly, feeling your belly rise. Exhale gently, letting it fall. Repeat for a few minutes.
Why it works: Deep diaphragmatic breathing engages the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging relaxation. It reduces cortisol, supports digestion, and improves oxygen flow, making it easier to feel safe, present, and centred in your body.
Try one or more of these each day, or weave them into moments of stress. With consistent practice, your nervous system learns that calm is possible – that you are safe here, right now.
The Empowering Takeaway
Your breath is your built-in medicine. It bridges the body and the spirit, the chaos and the calm, the fear and the freedom. Each inhale is a homecoming. Each exhale, a release. The more you breathe with awareness, the more you teach your nervous system that safety is possible, right here, right now.
